O Jesus draw me ever deeper into your Eucharistic presence,

Let me listen to your silent heart beat and know your Love!

Let me be still and know that YOU ARE GOD!

I am an empty, waiting vessel, fill me with your grace,

use me to save souls!

Please keep Bishop Frederick F. Campbell of Columbus, Ohio in your prayers today. Our Bishop is having surgery today and has asked for prayers. Thank you and God bless you!

Remembering St. Catherine of Sienna

Born: March 25, 1347 - feast of the Annunciation

Feast day: April 29th

Prayer:

Humble virgin and Doctor of the Church, in thirty-three years you achieved great perfection and became the counselor of Popes. You know the temptations of mothers today as well as the dangers that await unborn infants. Intercede for me that I may avoid miscarriage and bring forth a healthy baby who will become a true child of God. Also, pray for all mothers, and all those hoping to be mothers that they may bring new life into the world. Amen

Patron Saint against miscarriage:
Catherine of Siena

Eucharist and healing of the tongue

When I receive Holy Communion, I entreat and implore the Saviour to heal my tongue, that I may never fail in love of neighbour.

Saint Mary Faustina notebook 2. 590

___________________________________________________

Humility is truth, and Saint Faustina sees clearly where she stands in need of the healing and grace of the Eucharist. Her feelings reflect a soul sensitive to what can harm charity, and damage or wound a neighbour. Indeed the human tongue can be very destructive and inflict much pain upon others. We must strive to always speak the truth in and with love, but being mindful of the reverence we owe to others and being careful to avoid making them feel diminished in anyway... it is a real art to learn to use the tongue well ...Of ourselves we cannot achieve a victory but in and with Jesus we can! and that is why we need to receive him in the Eucharist.

Saint Polycarp

Lord, almighty God, Father of your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have come to the knowledge of yourself, God of angels, of powers, of all creation, of all the race of saints who live in your sight, I bless you for judging me worthy of this day, this hour, so that in the company of the martyrs I may share the cup of Christ, your annointed one, and so rise again to eternal life in soul and body, immortal through the power of the Holy Spirit. May I be received among the martyrs in your presence today as a rich and pleasing sacrifice. God of truth, stranger to falsehood, you have prepared this and revealed it to me and now you have fulfilled your promise. I praise you for all things, I bless you, I glorify you through the eternal priest of heaven, Jesus Christ, your beloved Son. Through him be glory to you, together with him and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

The beauty of Catholic Marriage Ministry

Last week I caught a little bit of "Life on the Rock" and they were interviewing the founder's of "The Alexander House", they are a wonderful ministry bringing prayer support to Catholic Marriages. This is a very encouraging mission that has a spiritual connection with Hannah's Tears as the cross of trying to build a family can weigh down a marriage unless we have prayer support and communication. Hannah's Tears is all about praying for the sanctity of Catholic Marriages and Family Life, let us also see the beauty of this beautiful ministry within the Catholic Church.

Catholic Marriage Ministry

http://www.thealexanderhouse.org/

Prayer Partners

We believe that prayer should be the foundation of ones live as we see it as being an essential part of the ministry of The Alexander House. Jesus encouraged His followers to pray at all times and “not to lose heart” (Luke 18:1), and 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “pray without ceasing.” In James 1:5 we also discover that prayer reveals God’s wisdom to us. Prayer allows us to discern and define our ministry, so we can’t accomplish God's work without continually seeking the guidance of God.

It is our great desire to have you partner with us in prayer—to commit to praying for marriage and families, and to pray for the ministry of The Alexander House as we minister to and serve the faithful around the world!

We are in need of "Prayer Partners" to pray for the request for prayers, for marriages that we receive.

We are in need of "intercessors of the Alexander House". These individuals would pray specifically for the well being and needs of the Alexander House.

If you are interested in becoming a Prayer Partner or an Intercessor for The Alexander House you can subscribe to the e-list group below and you will receive the requests as we get them. Thank you in advance for your willingness to pray for others in need.

To become a "Prayer Partner" send an email with your email address and name by clicking here.

To become an "Intercessor" send an email with your email address and name by
clicking here.

To request a prayer send an email with your email address and name by

Prayer Intentions for the Alexander House are:

  • Please pray as we seek financial partners to help us create and implement the Covenant of Love Marriage ministry.

  • Pray for the growth & expansion of the Alexander House as we are in need of a Business Development Director.

  • Pray for the development of a new ministry called the Marriage Disciples.

  • Pray for funding for special projects.

  • Pray for leadership to emerge for the growth of the Covenant of Love throughout Latin America.

  • Pray for the various website projects to be developed so that the Alexander House and disseminate solid marriage information and so our ministry will reach more people.

The Alexander House Prayer

O my God, into Your Hands, I ask that You guide the Alexander House and those involved in its efforts to serve You and fulfill Your will. I ask that You direct and protect them through each day, by the merits and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of all the Angels and Saints, from all vicious and unruly desires, from all sins and temptations of the devil. Heavenly Father, as You send them out to preach Your glory and witness to Your power, enlighten their hearts with the grace of the Holy Spirit; grant that they may always be obedient to Your commandments as they work to heal and strengthen marriages and proclaim Your forgiveness and love to all. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Gods Great Plan"

In order for us to heal we must bring things to the light. Sometimes when we are hurting we bury the hurt in the crevice between body and soul. We must learn to bring this hurt out into the light for inner healing, whether we journal or share with others in conversation, somehow the written word lasts much longer so that we can reflect more easily on what has been said. As we share with other souls in need we bring great comfort to their needs and our needs. God is so good in His great plan for us, He reaches into our pain that we might be comforted and bring comfort for the light that covers us is His love. In His love we will be healed. Through our pains God has a great plan for all of us and a greater good will follow. You can see this great plan when Christ was crucified the resurrection followed and the Catholic (Universal Christian) Church was born. Our resurrection will come! As we continue to heal, life will unfold, and you will be a new creation!!! Trust in His plan for you it is all good.

We would also like to welcome "Tucked Beneath His Wings" to the family of Hannah's Tears, please check out her beautiful blog site of hope and faith. The title gives such a beautiful visual meditation already as we are tucked beneath his wings God is very close to us. Reach for Him in your suffering he is there and He has many gifts in abundance that He is creating anew in you. Continue to "Thank Him, Love Him and Praise Him", give glory to God through it all.

Another site for you to review, especially good for Lenten reflections
Love you,
Hannah's Tears

This blog site is meant to support you and where you are today as you bear your cross let us take a moment and unite it with Jesus on the cross. "Barren and Blessed"

I pray that you all had a chance to watch EWTN last night called "Barren and Blessed". What a truly beautiful interview! Living His Life Abundantly has brought about the gift of discussion on how Catholic couples endure infertility and how they get through the journey.

If you are unable to view EWTN and would like a copy of the DVD for only $9.98, please click on the title "Barren and Blessed: The Plight of Infertility" . This was an interview you don't want to miss.

Thank you Kristy for your witness and bravery!!!

We at Hannah's Tears have posted Karl's book in the past called "Bearing the Unbearable" . This is a wonderful resource for personal use or using in a support group. Please remember all the suffering that you go through God is using these moments for his greater good. We don't always see the fruits but as we continue to place our suffering at the foot of the cross he will reward you greatly! These are times of great GRACE, keep trusting what God has in store for you and your spouse as you continue to seek His holy will. Our spiritual fertility is the greater gift let us seek HIM always.

2379 The Gospel shows that physical sterility is not an absolute evil. Spouses who still suffer from infertility after exhausting legitimate medical procedures should unite themselves with the Lord's Cross, the source of all spiritual fecundity.

EWTN show on Infertility

I had the undeserved privilege of flying to EWTN to appear on Johnette Benkovic's show, The Abundant Life. Although the show was taped in November, it will air next week. The president of the Catholic Medical Association and an author also appeared on the show with me, so you don't have to endure listening to my voice the whole time! Ha ha ha.

The episode is called "Barren and Blessed: The Plight of Infertility" (Program #447) The Abundant Life airs on EWTN, the global Catholic Network. If you have satellite TV, you can watch it through your provider. If you don't have satellite, you can catch the episode online live at http://www.ewtn.com/tv/index.asp Click on the "now showing" box on the right, ensuring that the "U.S." tab is selected. Tuesday Feb. 3rd: 4:00 am EST (if you're awake?!?!)
Wednesday Feb. 4th: 2:00pm EST
Friday Feb. 6th: 10:00am EST

The program was definitely a grace-filled experience. Infertility is a seldom-mentioned topic, so I hope the program reaches many women in the same plight. Let me know what you think of the show; I'm the one in a lavender blouse. :)

January 25 ~ Daily Grace Lines

These words of reflection from Women of Grace seem to go along with Fr. Jim's words posted Sunday, January 25. I pray they give you strength and encouragement for a day filled with peace and hope for God's miracles working in your life today.

God bless your Hannah's Tears Intercessor.

*Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul

"I am content with weakness, with mistreatment, with distress, with persecutions, and difficulties for the sake of Christ, for when I am powerless, it is then that I am strong.

2 Corinthians12:10

Dear St. Paul,

I wish I could say that I am content with weakness,
mistreatment, distress, persecution, and difficulties,
but that is not the case. All too often I complain at the
least struggle or trial. Pray for me that I obtain the
grace I need to endure all things for the sake of Christ.
Help me to see that when I am most powerless, Christ
can be all in all of me if I surrender my suffering to Him.
May the strength of Christ fill me and may I embrace
the cross with valor and conviction. Amen

Marching for Life from Coast to Coast

January 22nd marked the tragic 36th anniversary of the legalization of abortion through Roe vs. Wade. Since then, faithful Pro-Lifers have continued to observe the anniversary by marching in Washington, D.C. I had the honor of attending the March from '95-'99. Quite an uplifting experience then, and it blows me away to know even MORE people come to the March every year.

Sadly, our blatantly biased media never covers the March. A virtual media blackout, save a few spots on CNN and the ever-faithful EWTN. A blogger named Barbara has posted an impressive photo album of the March. You'll notice that the majority of the crowd are youth. I am always inspired to see teens & young adults boldly standing up for their lost generation.

The only problem with the March was its far location on the East Coast. Well, a few years ago Pro-Lifers organized in California the West Coast March for Life. Every year the number of marchers increase. What makes West Coast March particularly challenging is that it takes place in San Francisco, a city who officially declared itself a "Pro-Choice City." Talk about taking a courageous stand. I send many prayers and shout-outs to my friends & family marching in San Francisco today.

Meditation January 24 ~ Women of Grace ~ Daily Grace Lines

As we seek God's will in our lives for life, let us reflect on the words of St. Francis de Sales. May it bring healing to our hearts to see that God's plans are better than our own. Our acceptance is what is needed. "Jesus I trust in thee."

Feast of St. Francis de Sales, Bishop and Doctor (1567 - 1622)

"Our business is to love what God would have done. He wills our vocation as it is. Let us love that and not trifle away our time hankering after other people's vocations." St. Francis deSales

For Reflection:

How can "hankering after other people's vocations" lead me to be discontented with what God has chosen for me?

How does it deprive me of grace?

In what ways can it lead me into sin?

A tiny coffin, but a big witness

Today I attended the funeral for a friend's baby son, who was stillborn after 22 weeks in the womb. The parents named him Zachary. The image of the tiny, white coffin will always remain in my memory. Tears fell from many faces throughout the funeral Mass. Even the priest broke down in tears during his homily as he spoke consoling words to the congregation, causing even more tears to flow. (I was glad to have skipped the mascara this morning!)

It's a good reminder of the graces of the Sacrament of Marriage. I saw my friend K lean on her husband's arm as they followed the coffin out of the church. Only 1.5 years ago, she walked arm in arm with him down the aisle at their wedding. Today's grief, and their faithfulness to each other and their Catholic faith stands as a powerful witness to the supernatural graces of marriage...and the need to cling to each other in good times and in bad.

It's also a reminder of the dignity and sanctity of human life. K announced the death of her son on Facebook, no doubt evangelizing to many people who think a preborn child is not a person. Mourners were asked to make a donation to our local crisis pregnancy center in lieu of flowers.

As we approach January 22nd, the anniversary of the legalization of abortion, little Zachary's coffin will stay at the forefront of my mind. Now that he rejoices with the saints and angels in heaven, perhaps he will pray for the end to abortion as well.

January 17 ~ In Memory of ~ Our Lady of Hope

As I have been thinking about this day, in memory of Our Lady of Hope, who appeared in Pontmain, France. I must correct myself as saying that this is her feast day. I do not have that right to proclaim this as a feast. I was truly just amazed at this story as it brings a spirit of excitement, as a child who hopes for the Lord to hear their prayer. Please forgive me for any confusion I may have caused.

This story is so amazing as Our Lady appears to a people who have lost hope. These are the words our mother spoke to the people of Pontmain who felt no need to pray...

Our Lady speaks -

"but pray, my children. God will hear you in a short time. My Son allows Himself to be moved by compassion."

Sharing Reflections on the Presence of God

I just wanted to share some beautiful reflections from a simple, humble, Carmelite Monk. I realize that he had no children and does not know the pain that you may be suffering at this moment, but he does understand the pains of this life and the search that every soul has for God. You will find beautiful reflections in this little e-booklet on how to turn the pain that you carry into the joy that Our Father in Heaven holds for you right now. Check out the link below, "Practice God's Presence" and listen to what the Lord may be saying to you as you take time to talk to the Lord in his presence.

If anyone would like to share a reflection with us, please send them in... we are all here to support each other as we journey down the road of LIFE. What are these reflections saying to you? How have they helped? Let us know.

God bless you always,

Creative answers to "Just Relax"

The piece of advice that I most despise hearing from people regarding my infertility is: "Just relax; it will happen." If I had a nickel for every time that phrase entered a conversation, I'd have enough for a 4-course dinner at a swanky restaurant! Seriously, most of the time the advice is given by well-intentioned people; it just hurts sometimes. So I've been trying to come up with creative responses to "Just relax..." that can also bring a bit of laughter. My latest one:

My husband gives me great shoulder rubs; I don't think relaxation is the problem. :)

Do any of you have some witty lines? Please share! Wit and wisdom is always welcome.

A New Infertility Support Group

If you live in Lexington, Kentucky or close enough to drive there, a new support group is starting:

"Just relax; it will happen." "When will you have children of your own?" "Why aren't you a mother yet?" If your a woman enduring infertility, such questions are common and very painful. Statistics say that 1 in every 6 couples suffer infertility; yet the issue is hardly talked about...until now.

A support group is forming to give such women the chance to share their hurt, build each other up, and have access to a wealth of infertility information...all from a Catholic perspective. The first meeting will take place on Saturday, January 24th at Seton Catholic School (part of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church) in the library from 9:00am-11:00am.

The Baptism of Our Lord

"This is my son whom I am well pleased."

Attention ~ FOCA ~ Explained ~ Mary M. Boyert, Pro-Life Director of the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta

Dear Father Frank,

Pat Chivers mentioned that you have received some Emails warning that the Freedom of Choice Act is set to be signed January 21-22. This information is somewhat misleading and may cause people to think that our Fight-FOCA postcard campaign is not necessary. I put together the message below, and am sending it to people who contact me about it. Feel free to use this information to share with others. (What I'm doing is choosing the "Reply All" feature on me Email, so as many people as possible get the correct information. )

God bless,
Mary B.

============ ========= ========= =====

Dear Friend,

Thank you for forwarding this message to me. While the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is a very real threat (it is the most radical abortion legislation ever to be introduced in Congress), it is almost logistically impossible for Congress to pass it and send it on to President-elect Obama in the time frame mentioned in this message.

First, Congress has just gone back into session, and has not set an agenda for consideration of the bill - no testimony has been given, no votes have been scheduled. Also, if the bill were to pass before Inauguration Day, President Bush would most certainly veto it.

While I do not know the author of the original message, and I do not know where they obtained their information, I believe they may have been confused the possibility of President-elect Obama signing some "executive orders" that would overturn current pro-life policies. This is a real possibility, and could happen in the time mentioned. However, at this point, our contacts in Washington have not been able to determine further details on this.

Of course, prayer and fasting is definitely our most effective weapon, and whole heartedly support that part of the message, and hope that many people will participate in that effort.

As you may know, the Archdiocese of Atlanta is participating in the nationwide effort to mobilize the entire Catholic community to fight the Freedom of Choice Act through a fight-FOCA postcard campaign. Archbishop Gregory recently wrote a letter to each pastor, encouraging parish participation in the project. Anyone wishing to participate can contact their parish pro-life leader, or my office, for further details.

I would appreciate your forwarding my message to the person who sent you the original Email, and use the "Reply All" feature, to ensure that the correct information on FOCA is being shared with as many people as possible.

Thank you for your support.

For their lives,
Mary

The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) will be signed into law if Congress
passes it on January 21-22, 2009. The FOCA is the next sick chapter
in the book of abortion. If signed into law, all limitations on
abortion will be lifted, resulting in the following:

1) All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals, will be required to
perform abortions upon request. If this happens, Bishops vow to
close down all Catholic hospitals - more then 30% of all hospitals in
the U.S.

2) Partial birth abortions will be legal and have no limitations.

3) All U.S. taxpayers will be funding abortions.

4) Parental notification of abortions on minors will no longer be
required (regardless of age).

5) The estimated number of increase in abortions is 100,000 annually.

Just as important, the government will now have control in the issue
of abortion. This could result in a future amendment that would force
women by law to have abortions in certain situations (rape, Down
Syndrome babies, etc) and could even regulate how many children women
are allowed to have.

Needless to say this information is disturbing, but sadly true. As
Catholics, as Christians, as anyone who is against the needless
killing of innocent children, we must stand as one. We must stop this
horrific act before it becomes a law.

PLEASE JOIN US IN saying a novena (9 days of prayer ) and fasting
from January 11-19. For Catholics, the prayer of choice is the
rosary for the special intention of stopping the FOCA. For those who are
not Catholic, we encourage you to pray your strongest prayers with the
same intention for 9 consecutive days. We hope and pray this will
branch and blossom to become a global effort.

Please do the following 3 things:

1) Pass this letter to 5 or more people within 3 days or less (so as
many as possible can start praying on January 11)

2) Say a novena from January 11-19, asking God to prevent the FOCA
from becoming law in the U.S.

3) Fast at least 2 days during this novena (either a complete fast of
bread and water, or a Lenten fast of no meat and meals limited to 1
regular meal and 2 lesser meals during the day).

Remember that with God all things are possible and the power of
prayer is undeniable. If you are against the senseless killing of
defenseless children, please join us in prayer and fasting.

May God bless you abundantly.

Profound Quotes from C.S. Lewis

Faith and Family Live (http://www.faithandfamilylive.com/) blogger Arwen Mosher endured infertility before giving birth to her daughter. She blogged extensively on her infertility journey and kindly sent me some of her posts to help me in my own struggle:

No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.
Sometimes when the inception of a new cycle has informed me of the fruitlessness of the preceding one, grief will stop me for a moment. These moments are the emptiest I’ve experienced; I do nothing in them except shudder in tears. But it occurred to me at the last one – yesterday – that these moments are not sadness, they are fear. In my deepest grief I do not mourn the fruitlessness of my hopes for a child, I fear the fruitlessness of hope itself. This small thing, so longed-for, has not come, and for a moment I am frozen in fear that no things longed-for will ever come. My life is a constant longing for ultimate joy in God, and the tiny atheism that is the fear in those moments is enough violence to split my soul wide open. I know what Lewis means about grief feeling like fear; the grief of my unfulfilled hopes brings the fear that God does not love me. That is the only thing worth fearing, but also the one thing which my existence proves I need never fear.

Dignitas Personae and the Right to Life

Brian Clowes, PhD

NOTE: this is the first of a two-part series on the new instruction from the Vatican on bioethics. Dr. Brian Clowes has been an HLI missionary for twelve years and offers this first reflection of 2009 for the Spirit and Life® audience.

There are two causes of most of the human misery that afflicts the world today. The first is lack of respect for the transmission of life within the marital union, which leads to destructive practices such as contraception, sterilization, abortion, homosexual adoption and "gay marriage." The second is a lack of respect for the born human person, which has given us murder, genocide, racism, slavery, rape and many other evils.

On December 12 of last year, the highest doctrinal agency in the Catholic Church, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), released its first comprehensive instruction on bioethics since Donum Vitae in 1987. This document, Dignitas Personae ["The Dignity of a Person"], is an "instruction," and therefore does not proclaim an infallibly defined dogma. However, it was carefully reviewed and approved by Pope Benedict XVI and thus carries his full authority. It is therefore an integral part of the universal ordinary Magisterium, with which Catholics must inform their consciences and adhere to with religious assent.

In Dignitas Personae, the Church applies timeless moral principles to new issues and situations that have arisen from biotechnology over the past two decades. This document is based on a foundation of consistency of respect for the human person at all stages of life. We have seen that, when we begin to make exceptions to the universal dignity of the human person for whatever reason, even if it is to promote the welfare of other human beings, we inevitably veer away from the natural law and flounder in the swamp of moral relativism.

Those who read Dignitas Personae in a cursory or superficial manner might believe it to be a mere laundry list of prohibitions. However, from the very first paragraph, the document affirms the fundamental dignity of every human person, from conception to natural death, regardless of race, sex or disability. To be created in the image and likeness of Almighty God is the highest calling, and Dignitas Personae vigorously defends this status.

Far from being a negative document, Dignitas Personae is very positive in tone, showing us how to live a life free of the oppressive worries and guilt suffered by those who even partially embrace the Culture of Death. It frequently refers to the dignity of marriage and the human person, in addition to the positive results of scientific research and therapy used to overcome infertility and disease.

The document does not shout "STOP!" at the progress of science, but instead guides it towards being truly at the service of life and not of death or the manipulation of human persons. As it so eloquently says, "Behind every 'no' in the difficult task of discerning between good and evil, there shines a great 'yes' to the recognition of the dignity and inalienable value of every single and unique human being called into existence" [37].

Dignitas Personae favors the weak. If we lose sight of the weak or exploit them, we also lose sight of our very humanity. In such a world, the strong rule without regard to the small and helpless, not only in the laboratory but also over entire continents.

Just because the Church renders negative judgments about some biotechnologies, or cautions about possible pitfalls, does not mean that it is anti-technological. Dignitas Personae says that, in using these new technologies, man "participates in the creative power of God" and is "the steward of the value and intrinsic beauty of creation" [36]. History has shown us that any new major technology can be used to enhance human dignity or to oppress, destroy and exploit entire populations. Science needs a firm and clear ethical framework precisely because it has such great potential for doing either good or evil.

The potential of the new biosciences seems to be limited only by man's imagination. Since it is sometimes difficult to find our way in a confusing and complex world, Dignitas Personae offers welcome guidance. It draws a straight and clear line between activities that treat human beings as a commodity to be produced -- or as God's greatest gift.

Personae and the Right to Life Part II

Brian Clowes, PhD

NOTE: this is the second installment of a two-part series on the document Dignitas Personae. Author Brian Clowes has been an HLI missionary for twelve years and offers this reflection on the practical aspects of the document for the Spirit and Life audience.

As we saw last week, the primary purpose of the new Vatican instruction on bioethics, Dignitas Personae, is to clarify Church teachings on biotechnologies that have become prominent since Donum Vitae was published in 1987. Dignitas Personae draws a bright line between scientific activities that treat human beings as a commodity to be produced - or as God's greatest gift.

One of the primary topics addressed by Dignitas Personae is assisted reproductive technologies, or ARTs. Some people think that the authentic pro-lifer should welcome any means taken to bring children into this world, but such thinking reflects an improper understanding of human dignity.

The Catholic Church has always taught that a child should be the fruit of total self-giving between a man and woman who are committed to each other through marriage. Technologies that assist the marital union in conceiving a child through natural means respect the dignity of the child. One example would be the surgical repair of damaged Fallopian tubes. However, those that replace it through brute-force technology, such as in-vitro fertilization, do not respect this inherent dignity and inevitably lead to terrible abuses.

For example, if a child can be conceived in a Petri dish, why should we not then check to ensure that this "product" is free of defects? Why not freeze, experiment on, or discard embryos that are defective or that nobody wants? Why not use gametes from people who have desirable genetic characteristics? Why not rent a third party's uterus to perform the arduous task of childbearing, thereby pushing pregnancy into the province of the poor?

Dignitas Personae is very helpful in that it clearly shows how certain common medical procedures may be either licit or illicit, depending on their objective or usage;

  • the freezing of oocytes is illicit, although the freezing of ovaries may be permissible if a woman with cancer or some other disease of the ovaries desires to have children in the future;

  • pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which "weeds out" those embryos deemed to be inferior is not allowable because it is a eugenic procedure, although prenatal diagnosis is permissible if its intent is to prepare medical teams and parents to properly care for a sick infant;

  • embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) is impermissible, since it invariably leads to the death of the embryo, although adult stem cell research is licit; and

  • using gene therapy to enhance the human race is considered the ultimate in the condemned pseudoscience of positive eugenics, although the same type of therapy used to cure disease in a single subject's non-reproductive cells would be permissible. In other words, correcting a specific defect in one person's cells is called "somatic cell" gene therapy and is acceptable. But "germ line" gene therapy, which would affect all of a person's cells, is not, since it requires manipulation of embryos in a laboratory.

Since Donum Vitae in 1987, rapidly advancing biological technology has raised many completely new issues. One of these is "altered nuclear transfer," or human cloning that produces embryonic stem cells but not an embryo. This procedure needs more study to ensure that a new human being is never created and then destroyed before it can be declared licit. By contrast, reprogramming adult cells into what are called "induced pluripotent stem cells" is allowable since it can never result in the creation of a human person.

Pro-lifers will perhaps find the most controversial segment of Dignitas Personae to be the one dealing with the "prenatal adoption" of frozen embryos, leading to the birth of "snowflake babies." The desire to adopt these "orphan" embryos is certainly well intentioned and understandable, but leads to a number of problems, the primary of which is the perpetuation of the system that leads to the perceived necessity for such adoptions in the first place. The closest parallel might be Christian organizations which recently "bought back" slaves in Sudan, which implicitly implied that human beings may be bought and sold, and also encouraged slave-taking for profit. Dignitas Personae warns of the many ethical and practical problems associated with it.

Another subject that pro-lifers have been debating for years is vaccines made from the cell lines of aborted preborn babies. For the first time, the Church definitively addresses this topic in Dignitas Personae. The document states that parents may legitimately use such vaccines if there are no alternatives, since they have no say in how the vaccines are made. However, the parents should always ask their health care systems to make other vaccines available.

Dignitas Personae represents a welcome clarification regarding many medical and scientific procedures in the increasingly complex area of human reproduction, and will answer many questions that have, until now, not been dealt with authoritatively.

We urge all of our readers to go directly to the document and study it if they have any questions.

Hope in the Lord!

Their is so much suffering these days, someone sent me this video...and I felt a deep prompting to share this video with you all.

Let us place our hope in the Lord who made Heaven and Earth.

Let us meditate on the words in Psalm 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God."

Blessed Andre Bessette, pray for us.

Blessed Andre has to be one of my favorite holy souls that ever lived. He came into this world fighting for his life and continued as he served Our Lord in faith as a simple servant. He is probably one of my favorite blessed souls because of the way he loved St. Joseph and most especially serving those who needed to be comforted. Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. May Blessed Andre and St. Joseph bring you the comfort and peace that you need today through their prayers and ours.

Please find the link where you may order St. Joseph's oil from the St. Joseph's Oratory in Canada.

May this week of Epiphany fill you with His love!

Saint Joseph’s Oil: A Tradition for Today

The use of olive oil is an ancient tradition. It is employed in religious rites and is used as a sacramental to anoint. Brother Andre often suggested to the sick who came in search of relief that they rub a bit of oil on the part of their body that was hurting, while invoking Saint Joseph for assistance. He made it clear that the oil itself had no miraculous curative powers, and that only God had the power to heal. He emphasized that prayer combined with this gesture symbolizing the strength of one’s belief were ways of expressing one’s inner faith in God’s power.

Prayer for the canonization of Brother André

Lord, you have chosen Blessed Brother Andre to spread devotion to Saint Joseph and to dedicate himself to all those who are afflicted. Grant through his intercession the favour that we now request…

We also pray that the Church may canonize him as soon as possible. Grant us the grace to imitate his piety and charity so that, with him, we may share the reward promised to all who care for their neighbours out of love for You. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
